Send your captains through a 4 week accelerated

leadership program

to establish the positive, dependable, committed leaders of your dreams without any stress, extra work, or time from you

If youโ€™re a dance coach...

... looking to establish a culture of hard work on your team while reducing the overwhelming amount of work it takes to coach than you already know that you need to train your captains to lead your team alongside you.

  • You probably don’t need to be told that you don’t have to do all the work alone. You already know that you shouldn’t have to run late night errands, deal with endless drama, or fight for a stronger commitment from your team so that you can get past a competitive plateau.
  •  You probably already know that your captains are the bridge to your team. They allow you to have a pulse on your dancers so if you trust your captains to be positive leaders and role models on your team, the sky is the limit.
  •  After all, you already know that training your captains is the key tipping point that will allow you to gain back your time, establish a culture of hard work, and truly connect with your dancers.

HERE'S WHAT YOU

MIGHT NOT KNOW

Even if you’re lucky enough to have captains who are the perfect leader, the best role models, and your year was flawless and smooth (lucky you!), training your captains at the beginning of every season can…

  • Save You Time

Even if you are a new coach bouncing with energy and happy to spend the equivalent of a fulltime job coaching (probably on top of your other full-time job) it’s not sustainable. Training your captains helps you create a culture where your leadership team shares the weight of outside duties. So you don’t have to run errands, make social media graphics, or spend you time on mundane tasks. You can spend more time actually coaching!

  • Give You A Bridge To Your Team

When you have captains who are well trained in positive leadership skills, they become an invaluable bridge between you and your team. You will hear about issues before it’s too late to do something about it. You will be aware of an individual dancer’s needs even if she may not feel comfortable talking to you directly. When your captains are well trained, they become a solid connection to the team, providing precious communication between you and your dancers.

  • Establish a Culture of Hard Work

When your captains model the behavior you want on your team, it is so much easier to get everyone else on board. When the captains have the best work ethic in the weight room… when the captains constantly work on new skills even if they are the top dancers on the team… when your captains stay positive day in and day out… they teach the rest of your team that the bar is high, but everyone can, and WILL do it.

  • Create Lifelong Connections

Captains are usually special members of the team. The dancers who stand out, who are exceptionally dedicated, and hopefully bring joy to your program. When you invest in their training, you are investing in their lives. It’s not just about helping your team, you are giving your captains the gift of leadership skills that they will carry with them forever. And when you give them that special gift, you will create lifelong friendships with the next generation of leaders.

Even though the reasons to spend time training your captains are obvious, the process involved in doing it successfully is anything but

TRAIN MY CAPTAINS? AWESOME!

but where do I start?

Maybe in the past, you started out the season excited about your new captains. You have this feeling they are going to be great! They are well liked by their teammates, they seem excited for the position, and they are already putting in the extra work to help you. Then things start to slide and before you know it you have captains who run the team with an iron fist and cause discord on the team. Suddenly you have ineffective leaders who take more time to manage than they actually help you. When you spend time dealing with challenging captains, disciplining them, or just doing all their work for them because they won’t step it up, your team stays at a plateau. There’s no growth that season, you end with the same competitive result as usual, and it’s another year with the same problems over and over again.

Even with the best of intentions, most coaches start out the season with great captains and high hopes, but end up disappointed and burnt out. Without a super clear, done-for-you training that gets your captains on the same page at the beginning of the season, their leadership waivers and strays off the path. The honeymoon phase ends, the extra work becomes too hard, and they drift off course.

As a busy coach with a team to run on top of your “other” job, you can’t afford to waste your time with menial tasks that your leadership team should be handling, or even worse, cleaning up after them when they create drama and tension on the team. When your team culture veers off course and becomes negative and disheartening, it’s almost impossible to recover within that one season. Therefore, training your captains in positive leadership skills is one of the few things you need to get right the first time, at the beginning of every season

The 3 Reasons Why Most Captains Are Unsuccessful (and how to guarantee yours are better!)

They Don't Push Past The Honeymoon Phase

Most captains are so excited to be a leader and earn the “title.” They do everything right leading up to tryouts to convince you they will be excellent. They volunteer to help and go above and beyond, they are perfect angels in practice and demonstrate great work ethic. And then it happens. They get the title and they relax. As a coach, you’re excited to have this great role model ready to go, but after a few weeks things start to change. They start abusing their role, giving excuses, or just not living up to their promise to you and the team.

Most coaches don’t take the time to properly educate their captains because it feels like we shouldn’t need to! The thing is, you can’t assume your captains will take their role seriously once the hard work really sets in. Training your captains and setting clear expectations from the beginning will set your captains up for success so they are able to remain a source of positive leadership all season long!

They Are Talented Dancers And Believe They Are A Natural

Many captains earn that title because they are the most talented dancers on the team. They are better choreographers, they learn faster, and they are the example on the floor. However, just because they have beautiful turns or stunning presence on the floor, doesn’t mean they understand how teach others or help their teammates achieve their goals. In fact, many “naturally talented” dancers do not make good captains because they never had to work very hard and are comfortable coasting along.

Instead, you want captains who are examples off the floor. You want captains who are trustworthy, committed, gritty, and passionate. The good news is, you can teach your captains exactly what kind of example you want. And taking the time to train your captains in how to set and track goals, how to properly communicate with teammates, how to take feedback and offer corrections, how to handle drama etc., will help them be the example you need. Especially when you’re not around.

They Don't Understand Their Role

Many dancers are excited to be a captain because they see all of the "privileges" and "advantages" based on their outside experience in the past.

However, they often don't realize the amount of hard work that goes on in the background. Then you have a coach who is frustrated because the captains won't step up, and captains who don't even realize they aren't doing their job.

Instead, training your captains and clearly outlining their roles and responsibilities is the most time saving meeting you will ever have!

Shh...I'm going to let you in on a little secret

While most dance teams have captains, very few of them have effective captains. Captains has become a leader-by-default process in many programs. Some years they are really helpful, other years they are more work and cause tensions. But we just keep moving on doing the same thing the next year hoping for a better result.

Have you ever said, “I’m not going to have any good leaders this year!” or “Wait until next year, those juniors will be great when they’re seniors. We just have to get through this year.”

Don’t wait for good leaders to fall into your lap!

If you feel like you need help as a coach. If you feel overwhelmed, stressed, or sick of dealing with drama on the team, it’s time to take the step that most coaches won’t take. Spend the time and coach your captains on exactly the leadership style you want them to have.

You’re a good coach, so you wouldn’t take a new dancer and expect her to have flawless tours in the first month. You would coach her, guide her, give feedback, and explain the necessary technique. Why then, would you take a new leader and expect her to be successful without the proper guidance and training? Because it’s what most coaches do.

But you know what successful captains all have in common? Clear roles and responsibilities, a plan for dealing with challenges that will come up, and a solid foundation for communication with their coach. They have a roadmap for the necessary positive leadership skills.

Choosing the right captains and having them attend a pre-season leadership training is the most effective way to establish dependable and positive leadership on your team. And with your permission, I’d love to show you how to train your captains.

Here's What Coach Ramunno Had to Say:

Our senior captains were trained by Chelsea late last summer before our season kicked off, and we had the best year in leadership ever! Since Chelsea breaks down each piece of great leadership, captains enjoyed learning and never felt overwhelmed. She taught them how to genuinely create and maintain a positive motivational climate. Chelsea teaches captains how to do this authentically, as she tailors the training to captains’ personalities and strengths.

As a coach, the information I received from Chelsea afterwards was priceless. Chelsea’s education in psychology, combined with her approachability and experience with dance teams make her the total package!  She's the only one in the nation doing this type of training at this level. We met many of our goals this year and team cohesion was at an all-time high. This is the very best investment you can make in your team -- our team leadership improved beyond my wildest expectations! Team members had so much respect for our captains this year, and it was all due to Chelsea’s training! Thank you so much, Dr. Pierotti!

Introducing

Journey to

Elite Captain

Accelerated leadership training for your dance team captains

I’ve taken everything I’ve learned from over 10 years of coaching, hundreds of hours working with individual coaches and teams, and a Ph.D. in sport psychology, and channeled that into the done-for-you leadership training program I wish I had as a coach. Journey to Elite Captain isn’t just an online course for your captains, it’s a complete foundation on which to build your entire season. Yes, your captains will learn about leadership styles and what they can do to best support their team. But they will also get a structured plan for using their strengths to support your coaching and help the team reach your goals this season. The end result is a group of captains who takes stress off of you, exemplifies the commitment and motivation you want from your whole team, and a foundation on which to create a positive team culture you can enjoy and let thrive all season.

So if you’re ready to finally have a group of effective captains without the stress and time investment, here’s how we’ll get you there.

Journey to Elite Captain

Is the only program of its kind that…

Teaches your new captains how to go from dancers to true leaders.

No wasted time, no drama, and no extra work from the coach.

Guides your captains through challenges

Being a captain always comes with confrontations and unexpected challenges. The course will walk your dancers through challenges they should expect and help them create a plan for exactly how to deal with those challenges. Then when it happens (and it well), they have a roadmap to follow.

Teaches your captains how to communicate you the team and with you

There are many young dancers who have no idea how to handle difficult conversations. This course helps prepare them to have open and honest communication with the team and most importantly with you, allowing you to keep a pulse on your team.

Establishes strong communication strategies for you and your team

Saves you time, now as you set up your team, and all season long.

Here's how we'll help your captains become effective leaders:

Module 1

Prepare to Lead

Learn your leadership strengths and how use those strengths to benefit your team

Before you can start leading the team, you have to understand yourself. In Module 1, you’ll reflect on your own personality, how you receive feedback, what motivates you, and what personal limitations will come up for you as you enter this new role.

As you prepare to take the lead, you also need a roadmap for your personal passion project. Even if you’ve never thought about what unique quality you will bring to your team, this module will help you identify your personal passion project: the one thing that you can uniquely contribute to this team.

Module Highlights:

  • Take a look back. Before you can look forward, you have to reflect on yourself and previous leaders you’ve had in your life. Reflection is one of the most undervalued, yet powerful tools to success, so you start with learning more about you.
  • Discuss your personal strengths and weaknesses as a leadership team to get to know each other on a new level
  • Develop your personal passion project to propose to your coach in the final meeting

Module 2

Set Your Goals

Now that you know what motivates you as a leader and you have thought about some big goals you want to help your team achieve, it’s time to set out the plan for how to make it happen.

Here, you will learn the simple system to writing D.A.N.C.E. goals.

And that’s where most people stop, setting strategic goals… not this time! You’ll also determine your plan for tracking your goals and utilize the goal setting workbook to help outline your plan, so you stay on track. Once you understand the process, you can start your leadership journey by bringing what you’ve learned to your whole team.

.

Module Highlights:

  • Understand the basic principles of goal setting, what makes them so important, why they are effective, and examine your personal goals for both dance technique and leadership skills
  • Learn the 5 step method to writing a goal that will STICK
  • Apply the workbook questions and discussion points to outline a clear plan for attacking your goals this season, tracking your progress, and making huge personal strides in personal growth

Module 3

Find Your Leadership Style

Now that you have a clear passion and goals laid out for your leadership journey, it’s time to work out how to be an effective leader. There are 5 leadership styles, and with the short quiz in Module 3 you’ll learn which style you naturally fit into.

Once you understand the 5 styles, what works best for leaders in your position, and your own strengths, you can identify what your team needs from you. Whether you are a loud leader or more naturally quiet, you can identify your strengths and find a leadership style that works best for you.

.

Module Highlights:

  • Learn the 3 C’s of leadership, and exactly what to focus on in order to be an effective leader
  • Take the leadership personality quiz and identify your natural tendencies as a leader. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all way to be a good captain, it’s about mixing together what your team needs from you, what naturally fits your style, and traditional positive leadership strategies.
  • If you’re working with a group of captains, you can determine your group’s strengths and areas to lean on each other for support so that your team has the most well-rounded group of leaders possible
Module 4

Overcome Challenges

Even the most effective leaders will come up against some serious challenges during the season. The best thing you can do is consider possible scenarios and obstacles that will come up, and create a clear plan of action now, while you have time to consider your options without pressure.

Module 4 takes your understanding of positive leadership and puts it into action in our dance team world. You will walk through three main categories, leadership challenges, teammate challenges, and your relationship with your coach. Even if you feel like it’ll be smooth sailing, and hopefully you’re right, a good leader always things 4 steps ahead and has a plan ready to deploy when things get difficult.

Module Highlights:

Consider examples of real-world challenges that are specific to dance teams like modeling how to take corrections

Make a plan for handling those leadership challenges common to all athletes, like dealing with a teammate’s poor behavior on social media or what to do when you disagree with your coach

Take your leadership to the next level with the Feedback challenge. A simple 30 minute exercise you can do while teaching, to get some real feedback you can use to be a better leader overnight.

Module 5

Connect With Coach

Once you’ve done all of the work to answer some difficult questions, consider who you want to be as a leader, and exactly what you can bring to your team, it’s time to sit down with your coach.

Using the summary sheets, you can present your coach with a quick plan of action based on what you’ve learned. Part of being a leader is not just being a role model, but taking action to push your team to the next level. So by the end of the course, you will have a clear outline for exactly how you want to do that in your own unique way.

Communication between coach and captain is an integral part to your success, so the best way to wrap up the course is to practice having challenging conversations, learning to be uncomfortable, and developing a plan for your season that’s best for the entire team.

Module Highlights:

  • Simple summary sheets to quickly pull together everything you’ve learned and talk it through with your coach, saving you all valuable time
  • An exercise to practice having a challenging conversation, one that needs a real resolution before the beginning of the season. That way, you set the foundation for how this powerful relationship will go all year
  • Clearly identify your roles and responsibilities with your coach and fellow captains so that action plans happen and your great ideas get put into action

Frequently Asked Questions

What people asked before signing up for Journey to Elite Captain

That depends on you and your team! Most captains complete the work in about 2 weeks, but you can take it as fast or as slow as you want. Remember, you have access for a full year, and your captains are the ones doing the heavy lifting. So if it's summer and you want them to go faster, that's up to you!

You think that, and that’s a good thing because most teams (including your competitors) won’t take the time to do this. So you’ll be the team who doesn’t get derailed during the season!

Not at all! While it helps to set up your leaders at the beginning of the season,  it's better late than never!

There's no "wrong time" to train your captains and everything they learn inside the training will be valuable no matter what time of year it is.

No! The $97 price point is meant to be used PER TEAM. So if you have 3 captains, they can all take the course, and I hope they take it together! You will receive one log-in, so make it something you can share, and please keep it to your team.
